Heriz is a rug tradition out of north-western Persia, distinguished by its bold geometric medallion work and its preference for large-scale drawing rather than the densely floral compositions of the southern workshops. Antique Heriz carpets reached Western collectors through the Tabriz commercial trade from the 1880s onward and became a staple of American Gilded-Age interiors. This piece works within the Heriz vocabulary but in an unusual fibre, hand-spun recycled sari silk, which gives the bold drawing a soft tonal lustre that wool alone cannot deliver.

The 6' x 9' (183 x 274 cm) carpet was woven in India by two to three weavers over approximately five months. The pile is recycled sari silk hand-spun back into thread and knotted on a cotton foundation with the asymmetric knot suited to silk's slick body. The ivory base palette comes through the dyeing of the recovered silk before re-spinning, which keeps tonal variation across every metre of yarn. The finished carpet was washed in mild plant soap and laid flat to cure.

The composition

A bold central Heriz medallion, drawn in the angular geometric vocabulary of the north-western workshop tradition, sits on a soft ivory silk field. Corner spandrels mirror the medallion in inverse value. The border carries a stylised vine in pale rose and faint indigo, restrained against the ivory ground. The silk catches light from every angle, so the drawing shifts from cool to warm as the viewer walks past. The whole reads as a contemporary translation of an old format, alive in a way wool alone is not.

What you are buying

Hand-knotted silk carpets in this size sell through Western interior galleries between five and ten thousand pounds, and the recycled-sari source material adds a sustainability premium that this listing does not reflect. The fibre itself is genuine silk, hand-spun from end-of-life saris and knotted in the Heriz drawing tradition. Silk knots tighten with age and the surface develops a deeper sheen across decades; the carpet appreciates with use rather than depreciating.

The piece in a room

Six by nine sits well in a primary bedroom under the foot of the bed, in a home office under a writing desk and chair, or in a dressing room as the ground for a daily routine. The ivory silk reads beautifully against pale plaster walls and warm timber floors. Pairs cleanly with brass, walnut, and undyed linen. Avoid heavy furniture legs that compress silk pile; consider felt protectors. Pairs particularly well with contemporary art and minimalist sculpture.

Conservation

Silk wants gentler handling than wool. Vacuum every fortnight on the lowest suction setting with the beater bar fully off. Blot any spill instantly with a dry cotton cloth and let the fibre air dry in shade without heat. Avoid prolonged direct sunlight, which fades silk faster than wool. Hand wash by a silk-trained conservator every five years. With this regimen the silk holds its hand and lustre across multiple decades of use.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
