Hand-tufted construction took its current commercial form in the United States after the Second World War, when the tufting gun made it possible to produce dense pile rugs in weeks rather than the months a hand-knotted equivalent demands. Indian workshops adopted the technique in the 1970s and have refined it for half a century, marrying the speed of the new tooling to the colour vocabulary of the older Persian and Mughal carpet traditions.

Two tufters and a finisher worked the rug over 4 weeks in India. The wool was gun-tufted into a stretched cotton primary backing, then sealed at the reverse with natural latex and bonded to a cotton scrim. The pile was sheared by hand with long blades to bring the polychrome field to a uniform plane, and a final pass with shears carved the motif a few millimetres clear of the ground so the pattern reads in relief at room scale.

The composition

The geometry is restrained. A single motif repeats across the field at a measured interval, and the polychrome ground carries the rhythm without competing with it. The pile was carved in a second pass, which gives the surface a tactile quality that flat-cut tufting does not have.

The piece in a room

Bedroom or sitting room scale. The polychrome field pairs with oak floors and warm walls, with brass and matte black hardware both. A polychrome field anchors a room with otherwise restrained palette. Underfoot it has the warmth and density of a deeper-pile rug; visually it has the geometry of a contemporary studio piece.

Care

Disengage the beater bar before vacuuming. Tufted construction is dense but the pile is held by latex rather than tied knots, so aggressive agitation is the one thing to avoid across the rug's life. Spot clean with a cotton cloth and cool water for fresh spills; professional cleaning every three to four years handles ground-in soil. Rotate a quarter turn each season so foot traffic and light age the surface evenly.
