Contemporary studio drawing for carpet leans on mid-century Scandinavian geometry, Bauhaus ground-figure logic, and the painterly grounds of post-war abstraction. Hand-tufting allows the studio to refine drawing through proof samples and to hold a pile depth and density a flatweave cannot. The result reads as a designed surface meant to live in a working room.

This rug was hand-tufted in India over 4 weeks by two tufters and a finisher. Wool yarn was pushed through stretched cotton canvas one row at a time, then sealed at the back with natural latex and a cotton scrim. The last pass was done with hand shears, carving relief into the pattern so the drawing reads cleanly at room scale rather than dissolving into noise.

The composition

A saturated brown ground with the drawing carved a few millimetres above the field. The relief catches light differently as you move around the room. The yarn is wool, dense enough to walk on barefoot and resilient enough to hold its hand under furniture for years. Look across the rug in side light and the relief comes alive. The pattern catches shadow at low angles in a way printed and machine pieces cannot.

Care

Use suction-only vacuuming on a weekly schedule. Blot any spill immediately with a clean cotton cloth. Initial shedding settles after about six weeks of normal use. Have the rug professionally dry-cleaned every two to three years.
