Contemporary carpet design draws on Bauhaus colour theory, Japanese spatial discipline, and the open grounds of post-war abstraction. The result is a rug that reads as a deliberate floor plane rather than as decoration. The hand-tufted method is the right answer for a contemporary drawing that wants saturation and pile relief without the multi-month build of a knotted carpet. The trade-off is a shorter conservation horizon balanced by a far lower entry price.

This rug was hand-tufted in India over 4 weeks by two tufters and a finisher. Wool yarn was pushed through stretched cotton canvas one row at a time, then sealed at the back with natural latex and a cotton scrim. The last pass was done with hand shears, carving relief into the pattern so the drawing reads cleanly at room scale rather than dissolving into noise.

The composition

The multicolour field is dense and even. Carved relief lifts the drawing off the ground by two to three millimetres, holding the pattern at any distance. The yarn is wool, dense enough to walk on barefoot and resilient enough to hold its hand under furniture for years. The multicolour ground is even, dyed before tufting so the colour reads through the depth of the pile rather than only at the surface.

The piece in a room

4' × 6' (122 × 183 cm) works under a study, a smaller bedroom, or a reading corner. The multicolour colour pairs with both warm and cool wood floors, with leather and linen upholstery, and with painted walls that lean toward chalk rather than gloss. Light walls push the field forward. Darker grounds let it sit deeper into the architecture. Position the rug so a clear band of the multicolour field shows between the edge of the carpet and the skirting. The piece is composed, not fitted.

Care

Use suction-only vacuuming on a weekly schedule. Blot any spill immediately with a clean cotton cloth. Initial shedding settles after about six weeks of normal use. Have the rug professionally dry-cleaned every two to three years.
