A solid field rug is a deceptively difficult piece. With no pattern to hide behind, the colour and the surface have to carry the room on their own. Brown at this saturation needs to read warm rather than dull, and the pile has to give the surface a faint movement so the field does not flatten into a painted wall. The Bora answers both questions through over-dyeing and a careful pile-cutting pass.

The rug was hand-tufted in India over five weeks by two tufters and a finisher. Wool yarn was pushed through a stretched cotton canvas with a tufting gun, one row at a time, then the back was sealed with natural latex and a cotton scrim laid on. The brown was achieved through two dye baths rather than a single dip, the way an oil painter pulls a glaze over an undercoat to give the surface depth. The final shear pass evened the pile so the field reads consistent.

The composition

A single saturated brown, modulated only by the natural variation of two-bath over-dyeing and the way wool catches light from different angles. From one direction the field reads warmer and ruddier; from the opposite direction it reads cooler and more umber. The surface has the quiet movement of a corduroy or a heavy linen rather than the dead flatness of a painted floor.

The piece in a room

5' x 8' (152 x 244 cm) anchors a sitting area or sits at the foot of a bed. Brown of this depth pairs with cream walls, oak and walnut furniture, brass lighting, and white linen. It also reads well against polished concrete and pale stone floors, where it adds the warm note the architecture withholds. Avoid pairing with strongly patterned upholstery; the rug expects to be the warm field of the composition.

Care

Vacuum weekly with the beater bar disengaged. Tufted construction loses fibre to a beater bar regardless of price; a suction-only setting protects the pile. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth, never rub. Expect light shedding for the first six weeks of use as loose fibres clear from the pile; the body of the rug is unaffected. Professional dry-clean every three years.
