Tibetan weaving uses a senneh loop knot wrapped around a steel rod, then cut to release the pile in a single pass, a method the Tibetan diaspora carried into northern India in the 1960s. The hand is denser than Persian asymmetric work and the wool tends to be thicker, which makes the Tibetan rug particularly suited to modern abstract design where colour and surface need to do most of the work. The Niven Dots reading of the tradition runs at 5' x 8' (152 x 244 cm).
Two to three weavers shared the upright loom for around five months. Highland wool was hand-spun, washed in cold mountain water, and dyed in small batches with walnut hull, madder root, and oxidised iron mordant for the warm brown register. The pile was knotted onto a cotton warp at a density that allows the dot motif to articulate cleanly. After the loom, the rug was washed twice and sun-dried flat. The shear was set low and even.
The composition
A warm brown ground carries scattered red dots in irregular constellation, drawn at a density that reads as gesture rather than as repeat. The Tibetan loop knot lets the wool sit slightly higher than Persian asymmetric work, so the dot relief is naturally pronounced under raking light. The brown shifts between walnut and chestnut as the dye batches change. The composition reads modern, the wool reads ancient, and the rug holds both registers without contradiction.
What you are buying
Modern Tibetan studio work from the New York and London galleries lists at $5,000 to $9,000 for a 5' x 8'. This is the same loom, the same hand-spun wool, the same Tibetan loop knot, and the rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating against time. The wool patinas the way fine leather does, the design has been in continuous demand for thirty years, and there is no other floor object that holds value through wear.
The piece in a room
5' x 8' (152 x 244 cm) anchors a small living area, a dining floor under a six-seater, or a primary bedroom. The brown and red palette pairs with walnut, oxblood leather, brass, and warm plaster, and works under both abstract canvas and architectural photography. The rug grounds rooms with strong wall colour and adds warmth to white interiors.
Conservation
Rotate the rug a half turn each spring so traffic and light age both halves at the same rate. Vacuum weekly on suction only with the beater bar off. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth and never rub. A wool conservator wash every five to seven years preserves the lustre and dye. With this care the rug runs sixty years and outlives its first owners.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
