The kilim tradition runs from Anatolia through the Caucasus into Central Asia and down into the Indian subcontinent. What survives across that geography is not a single pattern but a way of building colour by laying coloured weft against coloured weft until the surface composes itself. The vocabulary is geometric, the colours are vegetable-fast, the construction is reversible.

The piece was woven by hand on a horizontal pit loom in India over three weeks. The fibre is jute spun into a heavy yarn, dyed in small batches and woven weft-faced so the pattern reads cleanly on both sides of the rug. Jute carries a natural sheen that softens with use rather than dulling, and the texture is dry and slightly coarse to the bare foot in a way that suits hot climates.

The composition

Multi blocks set against open ground. The geometry is built around the loom rather than against it; every diagonal is stepped, every curve is a stack of small rectangles. The composition reads cleanly from a standing height and rewards a closer look. The flatweave keeps the colour fully exposed; nothing is hidden in a deep pile, so the dye work has to carry the rug on its own.

The piece in a room

4' x 6' (122 × 183 cm) is the accent scale: under a coffee table, in a foyer, at the foot of a bed. Use it where the floor needs a single considered note rather than a full carpeted ground. Sits well under a low coffee table with metal legs and reads through the legs of a daybed. The multi ground stays visible at the perimeter of the furniture, which is what gives the rug its work in a room.

Care

Vacuum weekly on suction only. Air the rug outside every few months to refresh the fibre. Blot spills cool, never warm. The construction allows the rug to be flipped to the reverse face for a clean second life if the front catches heavy wear in one zone. Rotate end to end annually for even wear across the surface.
