A dhurrie is the truest expression of what an Indian loom does. The structure is weft-faced, the design counted as the rug grows, and the surface is worked flat enough that the piece reads almost as cloth on the floor. Stripes, chevrons and lozenges are the building blocks; everything else is a recombination.
The work took around three weeks on a horizontal loom under Two. The yarn was prepared in small dye batches and packed weft by weft against a cotton warp. There is no knot and no pile; the design is built into the weft and the rug carries the same image on both faces. The flat structure makes the piece fully reversible across its working life.
The composition
A ivory register sets the register of the composition. Around it the design holds quietly, with the secondary tones managed against the principal colour so the rug never falls into competition with itself. The wool takes the dye unevenly by design; small-batch vats produce a soft tonal drift across the field that catches the eye at distance and rewards a slow look. The piece reads as patina from the day it is unrolled. Hand-spun wool tightens into the foundation as the rug settles in, and the colour deepens slowly across the first decade of normal use.
The piece in a room
4' x 6' is the working scale for a foyer, a doorway runner length, or alongside a low chest in a small reading corner. The rug is meant to be encountered up close at this size and its detail repays the proximity. The piece carries enough individual presence that the surrounding furniture can be kept simple; an armchair, a side table, a single floor lamp.
Care
Care is straightforward for a piece that has no pile to crush. Run the vacuum across the surface weekly on suction. Flip the rug at the seasonal change to keep both faces in working order. Spills release with cold water and a touch of mild soap, blotted from edge to centre. A dry clean every three years lifts trapped dust and brightens the colour.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
