The dhurrie is the Indian flatweave equivalent of the kilim, traditionally woven on horizontal pit looms in cotton and wool. The structure is graphic by definition, the design held by the weave rather than printed onto it. A flatweave is a textile in the strict sense. The pattern is the structure, not a layer applied on top of it. That is why this kind of rug remains contemporary in any room, regardless of how often the surrounding furniture changes around it. The form has been refined for centuries and shows no sign of dating.
Hand-woven in India over 3 weeks on a horizontal flatweave loom. The structure is weft-faced, which means the neutral pattern is built up row by row from coloured weft passing over and under a hidden warp. There is no pile and no knotting. The drawing belongs entirely to the weave.
The composition
Neutral weft worked across a hidden warp. The flat structure makes the rug fully reversible and gives it the kind of disciplined surface that suits contemporary architecture. The flat profile means both faces are usable, although the front carries the cleaner finish. Both faces are usable. Flip the rug seasonally and wear distributes evenly across the structure, which is part of the reason flatweaves remain household textiles after a hundred years of use. Few other furnishings can be doubled in service life by a simple turn.
The piece in a room
2'6" × 10' (76 × 305 cm) works under a corridor of any length, an upstairs landing, or the side of a long bed. The flat profile slides under low furniture without bunching. Sits well under the kind of considered rooms that want one strong textile underfoot and let everything else go quiet around it. Plan the placement so a band of bare floor frames the rug. The structure reads better with air around it than fitted to the architecture. Pairs well with reclaimed timber, polished concrete, and limewashed walls.
Care
Vacuum weekly with suction only, never a beater bar, which can pull the weft. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth. A flatweave can be lifted and shaken out of doors, which is part of the reason it has survived as a household textile for centuries. Professional clean every three to four years. Stored flat or rolled rather than folded, the rug holds shape indefinitely.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
