Jute is one of the oldest textile fibres in continuous human use. The plant grows shoulder-high in the wet seasons of eastern India and Bangladesh, the stalks are retted in shallow ponds for two weeks, and the long bast fibres are stripped, dried, and spun. The cloth that results carries the smell of cut grass and the colour of late summer hay. There is almost no other natural fibre that gives a floor that quality of light.

Hand-woven in India on a flat loom by 1 weaver over two weeks. The weft is hand-spun jute, the warp is cotton, and the structure is woven dense enough to hold its shape under furniture and traffic. There is no pile and no latex backing. What you see is what holds the rug together. The natural register comes from the natural variation of the fibre rather than from heavy dyeing.

The composition

Natural reads as a sustained ground rather than a printed flat. Subtle tonal shifts run across the field where the yarn was dyed in separate batches and then spun together, so the colour breathes as the eye crosses the rug. The pattern is paced to read from across a room and reward closer inspection at the edge of the carpet. The geometry is restrained where lesser designs would clutter the field.

The piece in a room

2' x 3' (2' x 3' (61 x 91 cm)) is the working scale for a bedside, an accent at a doorway, an under-the-coffee placement, or a defined zone inside a larger neutral floor. The natural field is small enough to pair with a stronger statement piece in the room without competing.

Care

Vacuum gently with the beater off. The flatweave structure means the rug can be flipped twice a year so both faces wear evenly. Blot spills, never rub. For deeper cleaning, hand wash with cool water and mild soap, lay flat to dry. Avoid prolonged direct sunlight on the same panel of the field across long stretches of the year.
