The Gabbeh tradition came out of the nomadic flocks of southwestern Iran, where shepherd weavers worked away from the workshop with no cartoon and no pattern book. The pile sat thick and the geometry stayed loose because the loom was portable and the wool was their own. The piece in front of you carries that lineage forward, with the same conviction that less drawing on the back of the loom produces more presence on the floor.
The pile is hand-knotted wool on a cotton foundation. 2 weavers shared the loom across 2-3 months, working at roughly 80 knots per square inch. That gives a finished count of around 276 thousand hand-tied knots. The dyes were prepared in small batches and the wool was lowered into them before being washed in clean water and sun-dried over several days. Every step is done by hand because the result depends on it.
The composition
The field is open, the geometry sits where it falls, and the colour shifts with the wool from one knot to the next. That irregularity is structural to the form. A flat field on a Gabbeh would be a contradiction. The dominant tones run to rust, gold.
What you are buying
An accessible point of entry into a hand-knotted carpet of real workshop discipline. The construction is the same as on the larger pieces in the same lineage; the price reflects only the smaller area of pile. The rug is meant to be used and conserved rather than displayed and protected.
The piece in a room
4' x 6' (122 x 183 cm) is the working scale for a flat-living dining area or a primary bedroom with the rug under the lower two-thirds of the bed. The composition fills the eye without overwhelming the room. The rust tones sit well against lime-washed plaster, raw oak, and warm metal.
Conservation
Treat the rug as the long-lived object it is. Suction-only vacuuming, weekly. Twice-yearly rotation to balance light and footfall. A wool-trained hand wash every five years. Spills blotted, never rubbed. With that routine the piece appreciates rather than depreciates, the way every well-kept hand-knotted weaving does.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
