Beni Ourain carpets came down from the Middle Atlas mountains as woven artefacts of nomadic Berber life. Undyed cream wool ground, simple black diamond lattices and asymmetric line work, no centre and no border. The drawing was the weaver's, made without a cartoon. Picasso, Le Corbusier, and Charlotte Perriand brought Beni Ourains into European modernist interiors in the mid-twentieth century, and the carpet has belonged to that vocabulary ever since.

This piece was hand-knotted in India in the Beni Ourain idiom over roughly five months by two weavers. Undyed cream wool on a cotton foundation, with the black diamond and line work in naturally dark wool rather than dye. The high pile is a defining characteristic of the original Atlas carpet; the wool was selected for length and crimp before spinning, and the pile was left long after the final shear pass. The result has the loft and hand of the village original.

The composition

An ivory ground broken by a loose lattice of black lozenges and irregular line work. The drawing has the gestural quality of the original Berber piece, where every line was tied without a cartoon and the rhythm came from the weaver's hand rather than a graph. The pile is long and soft; the cream wool catches light at angles and reads warmer in lamplight than in daylight. With age the ivory mellows and the black warms; the contrast settles rather than washing out.

Conservation

Rotate twice a year. Vacuum weekly on suction, never with a beater bar; long-pile carpets are particularly vulnerable to bar damage. Comb the pile with a soft hand-brush every few months to lift compressed areas. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth. Specialist hand-wash every five to seven years. With this care the rug carries a working life of fifty-plus years.
