Berber weavers of the High Atlas have been knotting diamond and zigzag fields into raw wool for at least eight generations on the same kind of vertical loom. The motif you see here belongs to that quiet tradition. The pattern survives because it does not try to be ornamental. It is structural, like the timber bracing of a kasbah wall.

The piece took 4 to 5 months on the loom under 2 weavers, all of the knotting done by hand against a cotton warp. The pile is wool, hand-spun, taken from highland fleece that holds dye to deep saturation without losing the small irregularities that give a real wool surface its life. The dyes were prepared in small batches and the wool matured in copper vats before being lowered, which is what holds the colour against the light over decades.

The composition

The lattice opens and closes across the field. Ivory pile gathered into thick diamonds, ivory wool everywhere else. The pile is long enough to soften the edges of the geometry, which is why the design holds at room scale without going flat under a coffee table. The wool is undyed in the ground and minimally dyed in the figure, so light only deepens the contrast over time.
