The washed Persian carpet is a finishing tradition rather than a design tradition. After the rug leaves the loom and is sheared to the final pile height, it enters a controlled wash, sometimes a tea wash, sometimes a salt-and-mordant bath, sometimes pure cold river water with a long sun-dry, that softens the new wool, settles the dye saturation, and gives the carpet the patina of a piece already lived with rather than one fresh from the workshop.

This rug was hand-knotted in India by a team of three weavers across roughly six months on a vertical loom. The knots are Persian asymmetric, tied row by row against a hand-drawn cartoon mounted above the warp. The wool is hand-spun from highland fleece, washed in cold water before dyeing to keep the lanolin in the staple. The red is built from madder root deepened with a walnut second bath. After weaving, the rug went through a multi-day cold wash to soften the dye and give the surface its lived-in tone before it left the workshop.

The composition

A red field carries a traditional Persian medallion in ivory and indigo, with corner spandrels echoing the medallion drawing. The borders are layered three deep, restrained in palette to keep the red field as the primary visual event. The wash has already done some of the work that years of daylight would otherwise do. The red sits at the warmer end of madder rather than the saturated young end, the indigos read atmospheric rather than inky, and the ivory has the bone tone of a rug five years into use.

What you are buying

Comparable washed Persian carpets in this construction class trade at international auction in the twenty-to-fifty-thousand-dollar range when they appear with comparable fibre and density. The current piece is a new weaving in the same tradition, the same fibre, the same dye chemistry, finished with a traditional wash. It appreciates with use rather than depreciating. The price is set against present-day production cost rather than the secondary market the rug will eventually enter.

The piece in a room

The classic large drawing-room or formal dining scale takes a wool Persian like this one as its anchor piece. The washed red palette pairs with warm timber, brass lighting, leather and oxblood upholstery, and walls in cream or warm grey plaster. The softened tone of the wash makes the rug easier to introduce into a room that already has competing colour, where a freshly woven Persian would dominate.

Conservation

Rotate twice a year so the south-facing side does not bleach further than the back. Vacuum weekly on suction only, beater bar lifted. Blot spills immediately with a clean cotton cloth. Engage a wool conservator every five to seven years for a hand wash with plant-soap chemistry, the same family of process that gave the rug its initial finish. With care, this carpet runs eighty to a hundred years and crosses generations of owners.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
