TRIBAL

Tribal carpets are hand-woven rugs that draw from nomadic and village weaving traditions of Central Asia, Persia, and India. Bold geometric patterns, earthy palettes, and the irregularities that come from village looms give each tribal piece its unmistakable character. Rugsville's tribal collection includes 230+ designs in wool flatweave, hand-knotted, and Gabbeh styles.

What Defines a Tribal Carpet?

Unlike formal city carpets (Persian Tabriz, Isfahan) which have symmetrical balance and refined detail, tribal carpets reflect the freer hand of village and nomadic weavers. Patterns are bolder, more geometric, and often asymmetrical. Colors come from natural plant and mineral dyes — madder root, indigo, walnut, pomegranate. Each carpet is unique because tribal weavers improvise rather than work from a strict cartoon (pattern template).

Popular Tribal Styles

Gabbeh

Originally woven by Qashqai nomads of southern Iran. Bold solid-color fields with simple animal or human motifs. Soft, thick wool pile. See Gabbeh collection.

Kazak

Strong geometric medallions in reds, ivories, and deep blues. Originally from the Caucasus.

Kilim / Flatweave

No pile — woven flat with bold tribal motifs. Lightweight and reversible.

Baluchi

Smaller-format prayer rugs in deep reds and blacks with all-over diamond patterns.

Why Tribal Suits Indian Bohemian Decor

Tribal carpets pair beautifully with eclectic Indian decor — vintage furniture, brass accents, jhula swings, mixed textiles, plants, and warm wall colors. They work especially well in:

  • Eclectic studio apartments in cosmopolitan cities
  • Heritage homes with traditional Indian decor
  • Bohemian-styled bedrooms and reading nooks
  • Cafe-style entertaining spaces

Materials & Construction

Most Rugsville tribal carpets are 100% hand-spun wool, sometimes with a cotton warp. The wool is naturally lanolin-rich, making the carpets resistant to stains and water. Vegetable dyes age into a soft patina over decades — many collectors prize older tribal carpets for their developed color tones.

Care for Tribal Carpets

Vacuum on suction-only mode (beater bars can damage looser tribal weaves). Avoid harsh chemicals — natural dyes can bleed under solvent cleaning. Sun-air the carpet outdoors twice a year on a dry, breezy day. Spot-clean spills with cold water immediately.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are tribal carpets always handmade?
Authentic tribal carpets are always hand-woven. The intentional irregularities and improvisations are part of the value. Machine-made "tribal-look" carpets exist but lack the depth and longevity.
Why do tribal carpets have asymmetrical patterns?
Village weavers work from memory rather than a cartoon (pattern template). Small irregularities — slight pattern shifts, color changes from one wool batch to another — are signatures of authenticity.
Will the colors fade in Indian sunlight?
Vegetable dyes mellow gracefully over years rather than fading harshly — this is part of the tribal carpet aesthetic. Avoid placing in direct unfiltered sunlight all day; use sheer curtains.
Are tribal carpets more or less durable than formal Persian carpets?
About equal in durability — both are hand-knotted wool. Tribal carpets often have a coarser knot, which makes them slightly more forgiving of foot traffic.
What's the difference between Tribal and Gabbeh?
Gabbeh is a SUBCATEGORY of tribal carpet — specifically the Qashqai nomadic style with bold solid fields and minimal motifs. Tribal is the broader umbrella that includes Gabbeh, Kazak, Kilim, Baluchi, and others.
