Sari silk in carpet construction is a recycled-fibre tradition that emerged in the late twentieth century in South Asian weaving studios. The fibre is reclaimed from the cutting waste of the sari trade, hand-cleaned, sometimes hand-respun, and used as pile in pieces that combine the lustre of silk with the slight irregularity that comes from a recycled material. The Tribal Ikat composition pulls the ikat tradition of resist-dyed weaving onto a hand-knotted format.
Two weavers shared this 5' x 8' (152 x 244 cm) loom in India for about four months. The pile is reclaimed sari silk, knotted on a cotton foundation. The ikat-style figures were drawn in advance and the silk dyed in batches to match the cartoon, the way a traditional ikat weaver dyes warp threads before mounting them on the loom. The rug was sheared close after weaving so the silk lustre reads at room scale.
The composition
A neutral ground, in soft cream and warm taupe, holds blurred ikat figures in deeper taupe and faint rust. The silk reflects light differently from wool, so the field flickers as you move around it. The figures themselves are deliberately blurred along their edges, the visual signature of resist-dyed work, where the dye does not respect a hard outline. The colour is quiet; this is a textural rug, not a colour event.
What you are buying
Sari silk hand-knotted rugs at this size price at two to four times this MSRP at Western design stores. The fibre is recycled, but the labour to clean, respin, and knot it is the same as for new silk. A silk-pile rug appreciates as the lustre develops with use; the surface gains depth rather than wearing flat.
The piece in a room
5' x 8' (152 x 244 cm) suits a primary bedroom against a queen bed, a small sitting room with a two-seat sofa and a low coffee table, or a study. The neutral palette is forgiving with most upholstery and wall colour. Pairs with linen in cream or oatmeal, with walnut and pale oak, with brass lamps. The silk lustre rewards a room with mixed natural light.
Conservation
Vacuum weekly on the lowest suction setting; silk pile is more delicate than wool. Blot spills immediately with a clean white cotton cloth, never rub. Avoid placing under furniture with hard sharp legs without a felt pad. Hand-wash by a silk-trained conservator every five years. With this care the silk holds its lustre and depth.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
