The Bidjar weave is famous for being among the densest in the Persian repertoire, beaten down so hard that an old Bidjar can be folded over a doorway like an iron sheet. The structural density translates directly into a working life that can run a hundred years or more. This ivory wool carpet draws from the open-field Ziegler revival of the 1880s, reinterpreted on a vertical loom in India by hands that have inherited the technique through generations.

3 weavers, 9 months of patient work, approximately 1,728,000 asymmetric knots tied row by row against a vertical beam. The wool is highland-grade with a long staple length, chosen because shorter fibres flatten under traffic while longer ones stand and recover. After weaving the rug was washed in cold river water and laid in the sun for a final cure that locks the dye and softens the hand.

The composition

A ivory ground holds the composition without dominating it. Around the centre, secondary tones build depth through layered repetition rather than through sudden contrast. Vegetable dye gives the surface its slight irregularity; what looks like uneven colour at first glance is the visible memory of small dye batches and hand-spun yarn. Step back and the field reads unified; step close and the carpet reveals its hand.

Conservation

Rotate a half turn each spring and autumn so wear and light reach the rug evenly. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar disengaged, suction only. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth, never rub. Hand-wash by a wool-trained conservator every five to seven years. With this care the carpet will run several decades and pass to the next owner intact.
