The black-ground Ziegler is the rarest of the Ziegler subtypes. The original commission run from 1883 onward focused on ivory, beige, and rust grounds for the European drawing room. Black grounds entered the language only in the 1920s as commissioning collectors began asking for graphic statements rather than soft pastorals. Surviving black-ground Ziegler examples from the early twentieth century are now among the most contested lots at any sale of decorative oriental carpets. The piece in front of you works inside that thinner tradition.
Two to three weavers shared the loom for around four months in India. The construction is a Persian asymmetric knot tied through cotton warp, around 1.4 million knots across the surface area. The wool was hand-carded and spun, then dyed in iron-mordant black baths stabilised with pomegranate tannin to protect the wool from later corrosion. The pattern motifs were dyed separately in vegetable baths drawing on madder, walnut, and indigo before the wool was lowered onto the loom.
The composition
A deep black field holds an open Ziegler vine in soft rust, ivory, and faded indigo. The pattern is wider-spaced than a standard nineteenth-century Sultanabad, the diagnostic Ziegler signature. The black ground deepens the contrast of every motif without using bright dye to do it. Over the years the rust matures into terracotta and the ivory warms into bone. The border is a single wide guard band in black with paired ivory rosettes.
What you are buying
Black-ground Ziegler carpets at the 6' x 9' scale move through international rooms in the range of twelve to twenty-five thousand US dollars when antique examples appear with sound condition. This is a contemporary weaving in the same tradition, on cotton foundation, in vegetable-dyed hand-spun wool with a stabilised black ground. The piece appreciates as the dye chemistry settles and the open field gains the working patina that defines the category.
The piece in a room
6' x 9' (183 x 274 cm) suits a medium living area, a primary bedroom with a king bed floated above it, or a study with a single deep armchair and a desk. The black ground reads strongest in rooms with mid-tone walls and warm lighting; bright white walls flatten the contrast. The rug pairs naturally with brass, smoked oak, oxblood leather, and saturated upholstery in deep colours.
Conservation
Rotate twice yearly. Vacuum weekly with suction only. Black grounds show every fragment of light-coloured debris and require more attentive vacuuming than beige or ivory rugs. Address spills immediately by blotting downward on dry cotton. Hand wash every five to seven years by a vegetable-dye-trained conservator. The rug runs three generations cared for properly.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
