By the 1880s, a Manchester firm called Ziegler and Company had set up a buying office in central Persia and was commissioning carpets to a brief that opened up the dense classical floral repeats into the airier, larger-scale fields that the new Anglo-American collector preferred. The vegetable-dyed Ziegler revival weavings produced today carry that lineage forward at the same constructional standard, with the wash discipline that gives the surface its antiqued depth.
Three weavers shared the loom for roughly five months on this 8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) piece. The pile is hand-spun wool on a cotton foundation, tied with the Persian asymmetric knot. The dye programme used madder root for the warm browns, walnut hull for the deeper tones, and oak gall for the earthy yellows, with each colour matured in a copper vat for two to three weeks before the wool was lowered. The finish was a long mineral wash that lays a soft bloom across the surface and antiques the contrast.
The composition
A central medallion in faded brown sits inside a beige field that opens to corner spandrels in a slightly deeper tone. Vine work in walnut brown runs corner to corner with the irregular grace only plant dye produces. The borders are layered but restrained, two narrow guard bands flanking a single major border rather than the four or five band layering that turns a Ziegler busy. Vegetable dye continues to age. The brown will deepen, the beige will warm, and the rug arrives ready to begin that journey rather than arriving complete.
What you are buying
Antique Sultanabad and Ziegler weavings with 1900-1920 attribution and comparable size trade through Christie's and Sotheby's between 25,000 and 60,000 dollars when they appear, which is roughly twenty to fifty times the asking price here. This is a contemporary weaving on the same kind of loom, in the same fibre, to the same density, with the same dye process. A vegetable-dyed Ziegler appreciates with use rather than depreciating.
The piece in a room
8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) is the working scale for a generous living room arrangement around a full sofa and two chairs, an eight-seat dining table with chairs pulled, or a primary bedroom around a king frame. Mid-tone plaster walls hold the saturation. Direct sunlight is a friend to vegetable-dyed wool. UV restores the dye depth that interior light slowly washes out.
Conservation
Rotate a half turn each spring and autumn so light and traffic age the rug evenly. Vacuum weekly, suction only, beater bar disengaged. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth, never rub. A wool-trained conservator should hand wash the piece every five years. With this care the rug runs eighty to a hundred years.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
