The Ziegler design lineage is one of the more interesting commercial fictions in carpet history. There is no Ziegler region, no Ziegler village, no Ziegler tribe. The name belongs to a German trading company headquartered in Manchester that, in the 1880s, commissioned classical Persian weavers to soften the dense floral repeats that had defined the previous generation of carpets. The result was a new aesthetic that became the standard for the Anglo-American drawing room across the next half century.

Three weavers shared the loom for roughly five months on this 8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) piece. The pile is hand-spun wool on a cotton foundation, knotted with the Persian asymmetric knot. The black tones used to draw the floral motifs were achieved with a careful indigo-over-walnut blend, which produces the deep near-black register without the brittleness that pure iron-based black dye introduces into the wool over time. The piece was finished with a long mineral wash to settle the contrast.

The composition

A beige field carries floral and vine work in deep brown-black throughout, with the figure work plotted at a slightly looser scale than a classical Persian carpet would allow. The black draws the eye through the pattern without ever closing the field, which is the discipline that defines a Ziegler against a more crowded antecedent. The border is a single major band flanked by two narrow guards. The contrast will quiet slightly as the wool ages, opening the floral work into a softer relationship with the ground.

The contemporary Ziegler is built on the same loom, in the same hand-spun fibre, to the same constructional standard, and with the same dye logic. Blot spills with a clean cotton towel pressed flat, working from outside in. Hand wash by a wool-trained conservator every five years. With proper care the rug runs eighty to a hundred years.
