Tan and ivory together is one of the oldest colour pairings in the Persian and Ziegler traditions because the two values let the pattern read at any light level without needing strong saturation to carry the design. The tan provides the structural ground, the ivory carries the highlights, and the floral work between them needs only a single accent colour to feel complete. This carpet uses the convention to its purpose. Quiet, considered, and built to outlast everything else in the room.

Two weavers worked the loom in India for around five months. Roughly 2.3 million Persian-asymmetric knots tied by hand on a cotton warp, finished with three cold water washes after the carpet came off the loom. The wool is hand-spun, longer-staple than mill yarn, which gives the surface its slightly irregular sheen. The tan ground was prepared from a walnut hull bath, the ivory left as undyed wool with a light alum mordant to set the surface against soiling.

The composition

A warm tan ground holds the floral repeat in ivory and faded rose. The pattern runs edge to edge without a central medallion, which is the convention that lets a Ziegler-tradition carpet work under furniture without losing its centre. The border is a single vine band against a slightly deeper tan guard. The contrast between the tan and ivory will deepen with age as the tan warms and the ivory holds its position. The carpet reads warmer in lamplight than in daylight.

What you are buying

Comparable hand-knotted Persian-design carpets from Western dealers in this fibre and density carry retail prices three to five times this listing. The yarn is the same grade. The loom is the same construction. The knot count is identical. What changes is the route the carpet takes between the workshop and the buyer. Buying directly from India removes the dealer layers. The carpet appreciates with use rather than depreciating, which makes it a serious purchase rather than a decorative one.

The piece in a room

8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) carries a sofa and two armchairs in a primary living room, or sits under a six-seat dining table with chairs fully on the pile when pulled out. The tan and ivory palette pairs naturally with limewashed cream walls, with warm white plaster, and with stone in sandstone or travertine. Wood furniture in walnut and teak holds the warmth, while brass picture lights and bronze hardware add the metallic counterpoint.

Conservation

Rotate one half-turn every spring and autumn so the wool wears evenly. Vacuum weekly with suction only, beater bar off. Address spills immediately with cold water and a clean cotton cloth, blotting from the outside in. Professional wool wash by a conservator every five years lifts dust the household vacuum cannot reach. The carpet will pass through two generations with this routine.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
