Rust ground Zieglers are the most requested colour register in the lineage because the warm tonal range pairs honestly with both panelled wood and chalk plaster interiors. The original Manchester commissions of the 1880s asked Persian master weavers for rust grounds when the carpet was destined for a country drawing room with mahogany, oak, or walnut casework, because rust pulled the architecture together without competing with the wood for visual weight. This rug carries that brief into a contemporary 9 x 12 weaving.

Three to four weavers shared the vertical loom for around six months. The vertical beam carried the work for around six months under four weavers. Madder root for the rust, walnut hull for the deeper outline, oak gall for the shadow tones, and pomegranate rind for the lighter cream details were each matured in copper vessels for two to three weeks. After clipping the rug spent four days in sun and a long mineral wash that mellowed the saturation into a register that reads as already lived with.

The composition

A warm rust ground carrying a continuous palmette and vine repeat in cream, walnut, and faint indigo. The vine is drawn loose, the rosettes spaced wide, and the border held to a single guard band so the field carries the design. The rust is variegated in slow horizontal abrash bands, the natural fingerprint of small-batch dye work, where neighbouring hanks of wool sit at marginally different saturations. The rust will deepen by a half shade over the first decade as the lanolin in the wool finds the light.
