By the late 1800s, a German firm based in Manchester had set up looms across western Iran with a single brief. Soften the dense Persian repeats into the open, ivory-grounded fields the new Anglo-American drawing room wanted. The Ziegler workshops produced the first generation of these carpets between 1883 and the early 1900s, and the design language they developed has been copied, refined, and re-interpreted ever since. The piece in front of you is a direct descendant of that lineage, woven now in India to the same loom discipline and the same vegetable-dye tradition that made the originals worth a private museum entry today.

Three weavers shared a vertical beam in India for around five months. Around 2.6 million asymmetric Persian knots tied by feel, row by row, against hand-spun cotton warps. The pile is New Zealand wool chosen for its long staple and its acceptance of plant dye to the deep, slightly uneven saturations the Ziegler palette needs. Light blue from indigo lifted with a measured indigo-vat reduction, beige from undyed wool and walnut hull, with rust and madder accents pulled through the field as the design demands.

The composition

An open ivory and pale-blue field carries soft floral vine work corner to corner, with the irregular grace only natural dye produces. The border holds a single deep guard band rather than the layered borders that turn lesser carpets in this tradition busy. The blue is not stable. Over the next decade the indigos will deepen, the beige will warm into bone, and the field will lighten where afternoon light falls hardest.

What you are buying

Period Ziegler carpets with 1890 to 1910 attribution and comparable condition trade at Christie's, Sotheby's, and Rippon Boswell in the range of $25,000 to $55,000 when they appear at all. This is a contemporary weaving in the same tradition, on the same kind of loom, to the same density, in the same fibre. The carpet appreciates with use rather than depreciating. There is no other object you place on a floor with that property at this price.

The piece in a room

9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) is the canonical drawing-room scale. The wool field expects a ten-or-twelve seat dining table or a full sectional sofa above it, arranged as the work the room is built around. Mid-tone walls in chalk, oat, or warm grey hold the ivory. Direct sunlight helps; UV brings out the indigo depth that interior light slowly washes out.

Conservation

Rotate a half turn each spring and autumn so light and traffic age the carpet evenly. Vacuum weekly with suction only, beater bar disengaged. Blot any spill with a clean cotton cloth, never rub. Hand-wash by a wool-trained conservator every five to seven years. Cared for this way, the carpet runs eighty to a hundred years and outlives its first owners.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
