A long runner is the carpet trade's hardest geometry. The pattern has to hold across twenty feet of unbroken sightline without losing rhythm, and the eye has to be drawn down the corridor without being asked to count repeats. The classical Persian solution was to anchor the design to a central spine of paired medallions or a continuous vine running the full length of the field, and the runner in front of you was drawn against that same logic.

One senior weaver tied the entire piece on a long upright loom over roughly six months. Hand-spun wool was drawn through a cotton foundation, knot by knot, against a steady warp tension. Working a runner alone is the older protocol because the tension a single weaver maintains is more even across the length than tension shared between hands. Vegetable dyes were prepared from walnut hull for the brown ground, madder root for the rose tonics in the vine, oak gall for the deeper browns, and a measured lot of indigo for the rare blue accents that catch the eye at intervals down the field.

The composition

A warm brown field with a continuous vine carrying down the spine of the runner, beige floral repeats spaced at moderate intervals, and slim borders closing each long side. The brown is the kind that an antique runner develops after a generation of foot traffic. There is no jarring contrast in the design; everything sits in the same warm register. The vine breaks the length into subtle phrases that the eye reads without counting.

What you are buying

Hand-knotted Ziegler runners of this length sell through Western dealers at the equivalent of one to two lakh and the antique originals at multiples of that figure when full length is intact. At fifty-three thousand against a list of one lakh twenty-seven thousand, this is a piece woven to the antique density in the same hand-spun wool. The runner appreciates with use rather than depreciating, and a fully intact long runner appreciates faster than a comparable rectangle because intact length is the rarest condition in the antique trade.

The piece in a room

3' x 20' (91 x 610 cm) is the long-corridor or upper-landing scale. The piece sits cleanly in a long entryway, down a gallery wall, or along the open side of a kitchen island when the room is built around an axis. Pairs with stone floors, walnut joinery, and lime-plaster walls. Use a slim cotton underlay sized to the runner, not the corridor.

Conservation

Rotate end for end every six months so the foot-traffic wear cycles evenly down the length. Vacuum weekly along the warp direction, suction only, beater bar disengaged. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth immediately, working from the side inward. Hand-wash by a wool conservator every five years and ask specifically for the pile to be brushed in the warp direction during drying.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
