Ziegler is a name from the carpet trade rather than from any particular village. In 1883 a Manchester-based firm of that name opened a buying office in Tabriz and began commissioning weavers to soften classical Persian floral work for the new Anglo-American market. The brown and beige Ziegler in front of you sits in that hundred-and-forty-year line, a contemporary weaving for an audience that values restraint over saturation.

Two to three weavers in India shared the loom for close to four months. The drawing is open, the field carries an oversized vine repeat rather than a medallion, and the colour was held back deliberately so that the carpet reads as a quiet ground rather than as a focal object. New Zealand wool was used for both warp and pile, dyed with a combination of natural and low-impact chemistry calibrated to the muted Ziegler palette.

The composition

A soft beige field carries large-scale palmette and vine work in walnut brown, with the corner pieces and guard bands picked out in close values rather than in contrast. The whole rug operates in a narrow tonal range, which is what allows it to sit comfortably under furniture without competing for attention. The brown will warm slightly with light exposure and the beige will move toward bone over a decade.

Ziegler carpets of the original 1890-1910 production trade at international auction at thirty thousand US dollars and upward when they come up for sale, and the muted-palette pieces are the rarer find. Conservation

Vacuum weekly, suction only. Rotate the carpet end-to-end twice a year. Blot spills with cotton, never rub. A wool conservator should hand-wash the rug every five to seven years. The rug expects an eighty-year service life on this regimen.
