The hand-knotted carpet sits at the centre of every textile tradition that has ever taken weaving seriously. A vertical loom, a cotton warp, and one knot tied at a time by a weaver who knows the pattern by heart. Nothing in the apparatus has changed since the workshops at the Safavid court in the 1500s. What has changed is what we ask of the design. This piece works a contemporary field at classical density.
Tied on a vertical loom in India by 3 weavers over five to six months. The pile is hand-spun wool on a cotton foundation at about 120 knots per square inch. The 6' x 9' (183 x 274 cm) field carries about 933,120 individual knots, every one set by hand. The black ground is built across multiple dye batches and reads as tonal rather than flat.
The composition
Black carries the field as an interior ground rather than a printed surface. The pattern moves across the rug at a measured pace, with the densities slightly tighter where the eye expects to settle and looser at the perimeter. The wool pile holds the colour in a way that printed work never matches, with a small amount of optical movement that reads as life rather than noise. The piece is composed to be looked at, not just walked on.
The piece in a room
6' x 9' (6' x 9' (183 x 274 cm)) is the canonical living-room rug for a flat. It sits comfortably under a six-seater dining table, anchors a three-piece sofa arrangement, or holds the floor of a primary bedroom from the foot of the bed outward. The black ground holds against both light and dark walls and pairs with mid-tone wood floors.
Conservation
Rotate the carpet 180 degrees on a six-month cycle so direct light and footfall age the field uniformly. Use a suction-only vacuum at low power. Blot any spill at once with a dry cotton cloth. Have the rug hand-washed by a wool-trained conservator on a five-year cycle to flush out fine grit and refresh the dye depth. With reasonable care the piece is generational and gains rather than loses character with age.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
