Ziegler carpets bridged two markets that had until then been incompatible: the dense classical Persian tradition and the lighter, calmer interior taste of late Victorian Britain. The compromise the workshops found was an open vine field on a soft ground with restrained borders. The recipe outlived its makers and remains one of the most reliable signatures in the antique trade. What you are looking at is the contemporary chapter of that tradition.

2 weavers, 4 months of weaving. The cartoon was prepared by a designer working in scale on graph paper, then transferred to the loom one column of knots at a time. The wool was hand-spun on a charkha to keep the lustre that mill-spun yarn loses in the carding. The rug is offered in a beige register, made in India.

The composition

The palette is built around beige. The pile carries a slight directional sheen that pulls light along the warp. Walked from one end the field looks deeper, walked from the other it lifts. The pattern stays constant but the surface breathes, the optical doubling that no synthetic fibre reproduces. The borders close the field without locking it, the way a frame holds a painting without competing with it. The pattern photographs differently than it reads in person, which is true of every wool surface and one reason rugs of this calibre are ideally seen in the room they will live in before purchase.

What you are buying

Hand-knotted wool in this density is increasingly rare at this price point. The Indian workshops that still keep the weave alive are running on margins that have not moved in two decades, while the equivalent antique at a Western dealer trades at three to four times this number. The rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating, the property no machine production can claim.

The piece in a room

The format here anchors a primary bedroom or a compact living room. The rug sits below a queen bed or in front of a three-seater sofa, with the pattern reading as the field that pulls everything else into relation. Walls in plaster, putty, or warm white hold the saturation, while darker walls let the rug settle into the architecture as a considered ground.

Conservation

Turn the rug a half rotation twice a year. Vacuum with suction only, no rotating brush, on the lowest practical setting. Spills are blotted with cotton, never scrubbed. A hand-wash by a wool-experienced cleaner every five to seven years restores the lustre that household dust slowly dulls. With proper care the rug runs a century. A felt or wool pad underneath protects the foundation from hard floors and adds a softness underfoot that the pile alone does not provide.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
