A square carpet asks for symmetry the way a round one asks for a true centre. Without a long axis to organise the field, the design has to resolve in every direction without favouring one side over another, and the borders have to read as four equal frames rather than as a top, sides, and bottom. The Ziegler workshops handled the problem by drawing the medallion on a strict orthogonal grid and letting the lattice read the same way from any approach.

Three weavers held this loom for roughly five months and worked from a cartoon laid out in true square. The wool was hand-spun, tied to a cotton foundation, and finished slowly so the colour settled into the rust and beige register the antique Ziegler palette is read by. Dyes were drawn from madder root for the rust, walnut hull for the warm beige, oak gall for the deeper browns, and a small lot of indigo for the linear accents in the lattice. After cutting, the carpet was sun-dried over twelve days to lock the fibres at length.

The composition

A pale beige ground with a central medallion in faded rust, a vine lattice carrying outward in soft brown, and a slim guard band that closes the composition without weight. The colour reads as if it has already aged a decade because the dye lots were varied deliberately to introduce abrash. Rust against beige is the most legible Ziegler combination because both colours share a warm undertone and neither has to fight the other for the surface.

What you are buying

Antique square carpets in this size and palette appear at Western auction perhaps three or four times a year and clear in the range of three to six lakh equivalent. This is a new weaving in the same lineage, on a vertical loom, in the same hand-spun vegetable-dyed wool. At seventy-nine thousand against a list of three lakh sixteen thousand, the carpet appreciates with use rather than depreciating.

The piece in a room

8' x 8' (244 x 244 cm) is the working scale for the centre of a square sitting room, a primary library, or a foyer where the architecture itself is square. The medallion organises the room without having to be visible underneath the furniture, which is the function the design was developed to perform. Pairs with walnut, lime-plaster walls, brass fittings, and hand-troweled stone floors.

Conservation

Rotate a quarter turn each season so the wear cycles evenly around the field. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar disengaged, suction only. Blot any spill with a clean cotton cloth immediately, never rub. Hand-wash by a wool conservator every five years. Stored rolled with pile facing inward, never folded along an axis the design does not anticipate.
