The Ziegler firm operating out of England in the 1880s set the visual template for the Western drawing-room carpet. Their commissions to the Persian workshops asked for the same density and the same vegetable dye discipline, but with the floral motifs spaced out, the borders simplified, and the palette pulled back to the muted earth tones that read across European interior light. The piece in front of you continues that tradition with a beige and brown floral field.

Three weavers in India spent close to seven months at the loom. Hand-spun wool was knotted across a cotton warp and weft. The brown passages were built up from walnut hull and oak gall in copper vats, with the beige ground left close to its undyed state and the floral accents picked out in indigo, madder, and pomegranate. The wool was air-cured for a week between dyeing and washing to drive the pigment into the fibre.

The composition

A beige field with brown floral arabesques running corner to corner. The drawing is loose, the values close, the rug reading as a single warm plane rather than as figured composition. A single guard band holds the perimeter without the layered borders that turn lesser pieces busy. As the wool ages, the brown will deepen and the beige will warm into bone, the carpet acquiring patina rather than fading. The palette settles deeper into the room with each year.

With this care, the piece runs eighty to a hundred years and the dye work continues to develop through that period.
