Ziegler is a design tradition rather than a place. A German firm based in Manchester commissioned the original Ziegler carpets in 1883, asking master weavers in central Persia to soften the dense floral repeats of classical Persia for European drawing rooms. Open fields, calmer borders, palmettes given room to breathe. This carpet carries that lineage forward.

2 weavers shared the loom for 5 months. Hand knotting on a cotton foundation. Wool for the pile, drawn for its long staple and the way it holds colour through years of foot traffic. Plant dyes throughout: madder for the warm reds, indigo for blues, walnut for browns, oak gall for the dark notes; each colour worked in a separate batch and the strands strung to dry over several days.

The composition

Warm brown over honeyed beige. Trailing vines and floral palmettes laid out on a generous ground, the border pared back to a single restrained run. The colour will not stay still: a few seasons of light will warm the brighter passages and deepen the darker ones, which is the patina the rug is designed to acquire.

What you are buying

The price reflects the loom-time and the fibre, nothing else. A new Ziegler weaving of this size and density would sell at three to four times this figure through a London or New York dealer; the same piece would carry a similar premium at a major auction house. A hand-knotted carpet of this quality holds its value over decades and tends to gain rather than lose.

The piece in a room

At the size as listed, the rug works as a defining floor element under primary seating, a dining table, or as the anchor of a bedroom. The beige brown palette pairs with mid-tone walls, walnut or oak floors, and a relaxed mix of upholstery materials. Direct daylight settles the saturation; lamp-lit evenings deepen the darker passages. The drawing reads cleanly across the room and rewards a closer look on approach. The rug expects to be the work the room is arranged around, not flooring underneath the furniture.

Conservation

Rotate a half turn each spring and autumn so light and traffic age the pile evenly. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar disengaged, suction only. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth, never rub. Hand-wash by a wool-trained conservator every five to seven years. With this care the rug runs eighty to a hundred years and outlives its first owners.
