The Heriz tradition of north-west Iran is the source of some of the most architectural carpets ever woven, with their bold medallions reading at distance like Persian miniatures scaled to a room. The geometry is angular by nature because Heriz weavers worked from memory rather than from minutely drafted cartoons. This brown wool carpet draws from the long arc of Persian and Indo-Persian carpet design, reinterpreted on a vertical loom in India by hands that have inherited the technique through generations.
Production ran 8 months with 3 weavers working at the beam. Around 1,555,200 knots, each one tied by hand. The wool was washed twice before dyeing to strip residue lanolin, then re-treated after weaving so the pile recovers its softness. The weave structure carries a Persian asymmetric knot, which is finer and tighter than the Turkish symmetric and allows the carpet to hold detail at a higher density.
The composition
The palette is anchored in brown with subtle counter-tones that come forward at different times of day. There is no flat colour anywhere on the rug; every block is built from yarn that varies fibre by fibre, which is why hand-knotted wool ages with such grace. Under morning daylight the rug presents its cool register; under evening lamplight the warm undertones pull forward and the room re-reads.
What you are buying
An entry point to collecting hand-knotted wool work from the Indian looms. Comparable density and dye discipline at Western dealer counters opens at significantly higher prices once import, retail markup, and provenance documentation are layered in. The rug will outlast the room it is bought for.
The piece in a room
size as listed () sits well beneath a sofa-and-two-chair grouping or a queen bed with the lower two-thirds of the frame on the wool. The piece organises a room without taking it over. The brown reads warm under incandescent light and cools slightly under daylight, so the rug presents two faces across the day.
Conservation
Quarter-turn the rug each season to even out the pattern of wear. Vacuum gently with the brush bar lifted. Spills blot up with cold water and a soft cloth. Plan a deep hand-wash every half-decade to preserve the dye saturation and the strength of the warp.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
