A patchwork overdye is, in essence, a second life. The base carpets that go into one of these rugs were woven decades earlier in another tradition, used in another house, and judged worn enough that the surface was scheduled for re-purposing rather than restoration. The rebuild salvages the structural wool, joins it under workshop discipline, and unifies the field under a single tonal bath. The lineage of the technique runs through Anatolia and into contemporary Indian workshops who have inherited the format.
The piece in front of you was reconstructed over four months by a team of three weavers. Wool was hand-knotted onto a cotton foundation at standard density, then sliced into rectangular tiles, hand-stitched along the warp, and submerged in a violet-purple aniline bath until the saturation reached display level. The pile was sheared back to expose the seams as a structural grid, and the underside was reinforced with a fresh cotton scrim. Faint shadow imagery from the parent rugs shows through the purple as the eye adjusts.
The composition
Saturated purple carrying ghost imagery in cream, oxidised gold, soft red, and pale green from the source carpets. The under-patterns are not legible as motifs anymore; they read as faint variations in the surface tone, the way a glaze sits over an underpainting. The seams form a regular grid that introduces architectural rhythm into the field. Direct light pushes the violet warmer toward magenta; ambient interior light settles it toward aubergine.
What you are buying
The international dealer market for hand-knotted overdyed patchwork at this scale and density runs roughly 1,900 to 3,000 GBP. Listed here at 94,399 against an MSRP of 3,77,300, the rug undercuts that band by a wide margin while preserving the construction discipline. Wool of this density appreciates with use, develops patina, and outlives the room it first enters; that is what separates a knotted carpet from a printed surface.
The piece in a room
7' x 10' (213 x 305 cm) carries a sofa-and-two-chairs configuration cleanly, or fits a six-seat dining table with proper chair-pull clearance. Purple wants quiet walls. Plaster, bone, soft grey, or chalky white all work; saturated coloured walls compete with the field. Pair with walnut, dark oak, blackened steel, brass, and linen rather than busy pattern.
Conservation
Rotate every six months. Vacuum weekly, suction only, no beater bar. Spills lift with a flat blot of cotton cloth and never with a circular wipe. Schedule a hand-wash by a wool-trained cleaner every five years to draw compacted dust out of the foundation. The rug is engineered for sixty to eighty years of household use under that protocol.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
