By the early 2000s, overdyed patchwork carpets had become one of the few categories of post-war rug that crossed cleanly into modern interiors. Designers in Milan and New York had been searching for a floor object that could carry the weight of antique tradition without the formality of an unbroken classical field. The patchwork overdye answered the brief by fragmenting old carpets into panels of equal scale and unifying them under a single tonal wash. Indian workshops adopted the format with their own hand-knotted base wool.
This rug came off the loom after roughly four months of work for a team of three weavers. The base was hand-knotted in wool on a cotton warp and weft at standard density, then divided into rectangular panels and overdyed in a violet-purple bath where the alkalinity was tuned to lift the original colours partway, leaving them as ghost imagery beneath the new ground. The pile was sheared close to expose the seams as part of the composition rather than concealing them.
The composition
Saturated purple across the field, with under-patterns of cream, faded red, oxidised green, and pale indigo emerging through the wash at varying intensities. Each panel reads as a fragment of a different parent carpet, and no two squares carry the same residual geometry. The surface alternates between flat colour planes and faint floral repeats. Direct sunlight intensifies the violet; lamp light pulls it toward burgundy.
What you are buying
Comparable hand-knotted overdyed wool patchworks of this scale at international dealers list around 1,800 to 2,800 GBP. The price here, 94,399 against an MSRP of 3,77,300, reflects the four-month weaving cycle plus the secondary work of cutting, joining, and re-bathing. The construction is appreciable. The rug improves with daily use rather than wearing toward replacement, which is the property only hand-knotted wool retains over decades.
The piece in a room
7' x 10' (213 x 305 cm) covers a six-seat dining room or a primary sitting area with two facing sofas. Purple at this saturation reads as a graphic ground, so keep walls in plaster, bone, mushroom, or pale sage. Deep walnut furniture holds well; black-stained oak holds better. Avoid brass-yellow lighting; the violet wants cool white or warm-neutral light to keep its register.
Conservation
Rotate every six months to balance light fade across the panels. Vacuum suction-only on a weekly basis, no rotating brush. Spills should be lifted by blotting straight down with a cotton towel, the towel weighted by a book until dry. Schedule a professional hand-wash by a wool-conservator every five years. The rug expects a working life of seventy years under household conditions.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
