Old rugs do not always retire. When a village carpet from the wool belt that runs through eastern Turkey and the Caucasus has been walked on for half a century, the corners and the borders often outlive the central field. Patchwork is the practice that gives those surviving sections a second register of life. They are cut, washed clean, joined back together, and immersed in a single contemporary colour. The purple reading is one of the more saturated members of the family, sitting between mulberry and aubergine.

For this 7' x 10' (213 x 305 cm), three weavers shared the work over approximately four months. The constituent panels were trimmed to a uniform pile, scoured of their old surface colour, and lowered into a controlled purple bath at moderate temperature so the wool drew the pigment evenly across fibres of varying age. After dyeing, the patches were assembled by hand using cotton thread, reinforced with a new foundation, and warm-washed to settle the surface and release the natural lustre of the older wool.

The composition

From across a room the rug reads as a deep, single purple field cut into a soft grid by the seams. Move closer and the original drawings reassert. Stylised carnations sit next to fragments of medallion. A section of stepped border from one rug runs into a stylised vine from another. The colour shifts from panel to panel are a feature of the technique, not a flaw. Wool of different ages absorbs new pigment at different rates and the resulting variegation is the signature of authentic patchwork.

The purple ground takes brass, walnut, ebonised oak, polished concrete, lime plaster. It carries depth into otherwise neutral rooms and pulls a saturated room into more historic register. Pair with cream linen for a softer reading and with charcoal upholstery for a denser one.

Conservation

Use suction-only vacuuming once a week, never with a beater bar. Rotate the rug each March and September. Blot spills with white cotton, working from outside in, never rubbing. Hand wash by a wool-trained conservator every seven or eight years. With this care the rug holds its colour, structure, and value across two generations.
