Patchwork as a carpet idea began in the 1990s when Turkish dealers started cutting down old, worn village rugs and stitching the salvageable pieces back together as fresh compositions. The vintage patchwork tradition that followed treats every panel as a fragment of memory, joined to the next not by motif but by tonal logic. Pink, in this lineage, is unusual. It is the colour you get when the original red field has been sun-faded for forty years, then taken back through an over-dye bath that pulls the surviving pigment toward rose.

Two weavers shared a 5' x 8' (152 x 244 cm) loom for around four months to construct this piece in India. The pile is hand-spun wool on a cotton foundation, knotted at a traditional density. After the field was finished, the rug went through an antique wash, was sheared close to the foundation, and then immersed in a single hand-dye bath of pink that the weaver mixed in copper vessels.

The composition

The patchwork grid is irregular. Some panels are wider, some taller, joined along seams that do not always line up. The pink reads as a single field at a distance and resolves into a dozen tonal variations on approach. Older sections drink the dye more deeply; newer ones hold the rose closer to the surface. The effect is closer to a Mark Rothko colour study than to a traditional carpet.

An equivalent assembled-patchwork rug from a European dealer would be priced two to three times higher. This is a hand-knotted wool piece in the same idiom, made by hand, not a printed reproduction. The price is justified by the labour months and by the fact that the rug holds its character with use rather than losing it.

The pink sits comfortably with brass, with bleached oak, with linen upholstery in cream or grey. A white wall amplifies the saturation; a deep plaster wall lets the rug recede into the architecture.

Conservation

Rotate the rug each season to keep light wear even. Vacuum on the lowest setting with the beater bar disengaged. Blot any spill immediately with a clean cotton cloth; do not rub the pile. Have the rug hand-cleaned by a wool conservator every six to seven years. With this routine the patchwork will hold its tonal balance for decades.
