Patchwork overdye started as a recycling practice in Anatolian villages, where worn antique rugs were cut into rectangles, washed in caustic strippers to remove most of the original dye, then redyed in single saturated colours and stitched together for a new floor. The process turned hundred-year-old wool into something that read as both archive and statement. The technique has since been adapted by hand-knot workshops that build the patchwork composition from new wool rather than reclaimed pieces, which gives the look without the structural inconsistency of stitched antique fragments.

Two weavers shared a vertical loom in India for around five months on this piece, working from a cartoon that maps the patchwork onto a single continuous foundation rather than piecing it together. Hand-spun wool was knotted over a cotton warp and weft. After the rug came off the loom it was washed in an overdye bath of orange that bled gently into the underlying cartoon, leaving traces of the original tribal motifs visible under the saturated top colour. The slight unevenness of the orange is the point.

The composition

A saturated orange field with the underlying cartoon visible as ghosts of geometric motifs from the Caucasian and Anatolian tribal vocabulary. Stars, hooks, lozenges, and stepped diamonds float beneath the overdye. The orange is built from madder root and a controlled synthetic boost, with the colour deliberately uneven across the patchwork sections so the rug reads as recovered antique rather than as a flat single-tone weaving. Different sections will fade at slightly different rates over the first decade, which deepens the patchwork effect.
