Indigo is the oldest dye in the carpet vocabulary. The blue overdyed patchwork therefore reads as a contemporary handling of an ancient pigment. Older village rugs from the wool belt of eastern Turkey and the southern Caucasus already used indigo as a primary in their first life, sometimes as the ground, more often as a contrast against red. A blue overdye washes those original blues forward and brings the rest of the palette into a unified deep marine register. The result has the weight of an antique and the discipline of a contemporary composition.

For this 7' x 10' (213 x 305 cm) rug, three weavers shared the loom over roughly four months. The constituent fragments were sectioned, trimmed to uniform pile, and scoured of their original surface colour. The wool was then immersed in a controlled indigo bath at moderate temperature, withdrawn slowly to allow the dye to oxidise on the fibre rather than soak into it, and dried before assembly. The panels were stitched by hand with cotton thread, supported with a fresh cotton foundation, and warm-washed once as a finished rug.

The composition

Twelve feet from the rug the eye reads a single deep blue field. Six feet in, the underlying drawings begin to resolve. Medallion fragments, sections of border guard, stylised botanical motifs from older Caucasian and Anatolian carpets. The blue carries a faint shift toward green at certain angles because indigo is a surface dye that oxidises on the fibre rather than penetrating it. The rug deepens over the first year of use as ambient light works on the surface.

What you are buying

Galleries pricing comparable blue overdyed patchworks list them between $5,500 and $11,000 depending on size. This piece clears at ₹94,399 against an MSRP of ₹3,77,300. Each rug is a one-off because the source fragments are. The supply of older village wool capable of supporting this kind of work is finite. Hand-knotted wool maintained reasonably appreciates rather than depreciates as the indigo settles into the fibre over the first decade.

The piece in a room

7' x 10' (213 x 305 cm) anchors a primary living group or supports a six-seater dining floor. Deep blue is the most cinematic reading of the patchwork canon. Pair the rug with cream linen upholstery, brass lighting, and walnut joinery for the most considered effect. It reads beautifully under contemporary art in a complementary register, especially burnt orange or pale yellow. Lime-washed walls hold the rug as a focal field. Charcoal walls let it dissolve into the architecture of the room.

Conservation

Vacuum weekly with suction only. Indigo is particularly susceptible to abrasion damage because the dye sits on the fibre surface. Rotate the rug each spring and autumn. Blot spills immediately with white cotton, never rub. A wool conservator should hand wash the rug every seven years to restore the lanolin and lock the indigo. Avoid chlorine and any alkaline cleaner which lifts indigo more aggressively than other dyes.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
