Vintage Beni Ourain rugs have a particular quality of light that newer pieces struggle to reach. The wool, after twenty or thirty years of use, settles into a felted hand that no production rug can imitate, and the ivory ground takes on a warm bone tone the original undyed fleece does not carry from the loom. The pile is undyed handspun wool from highland sheep in northern India, with the dark linework woven from naturally pigmented brown wool rather than dyed. The pile cuts to twenty millimetres, which sits long for a rug of this scale and gives the surface the soft sculptural hand collectors expect from the form. The tea wash is a careful immersion in walnut and tannin water for thirty-six hours.

The composition

The field is beige and ivory, warmed by the wash, with a sparse lattice of dark brown lines drifting across it. The lines wander, the diamonds half-resolve and dissolve, the spacing varies. No two diamonds in the rug have the same proportions. The colour reads as a single neutral plane from across the room and as a complex tonal field on closer inspection. The palette is uncommitted; nothing about the rug pushes a room toward warm or cool.
