Red and white is one of the oldest colour pairings in the Persian tradition, and it works because the contrast is uncompromising. Madder ground, undyed wool drawing, no third tone competing for the eye. The Mahal workshops in western Iran built their reputation on this kind of declarative composition, and the design vocabulary they developed at the end of the nineteenth century has been the most-copied open-field idiom in the carpet trade ever since. The piece in front of you is a contemporary weaving inside that lineage.

Two to three weavers shared the loom for around four and a half months in India. Around 1.7 million asymmetric knots tied against cotton warps in hand-spun New Zealand wool. The red ground was pulled from madder root matured in copper vats; the white reading is undyed wool. The carpet was finished with a slow wash to soften the saturation, then sheared back to expose the slight irregularity that hand-spun wool produces against a flat machine yarn.

The composition

A madder field carries an all-over floral repeat in undyed white. The pattern is evenly distributed across the ground, no central medallion, with a single deep border framing the composition rather than the multi-tier borders the lesser end of this tradition uses. The white is not stable. Over the years it will warm toward bone, the madder will lighten and reveal the brick undertone the dye carries beneath the surface red.

What you are buying

Antique Persian carpets in this idiom with comparable condition trade at western auction in the range of $20,000 to $45,000 when they appear at all. This is a contemporary weaving inside the same tradition, on the same kind of loom, to the same density, in the same fibre. The carpet appreciates with use rather than depreciating. The MSRP printed against the price is calibrated against the international auction record, not against retail comparables.

The piece in a room

The standard 8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) reading anchors a primary bedroom or a medium-large living area. The red field works best against ivory or chalk walls, with mid-tone wood furniture and high-contrast black or brass accents. The palette is uncompromising; the rest of the room should commit to it rather than compete with it.

Conservation

Rotate a half turn each spring and autumn so the borders age evenly with foot traffic. Vacuum weekly with suction only, no beater bar. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth, working from the outside of the spill inward. Schedule a hand-wash by a wool-trained conservator every five to seven years. With this care the piece runs three generations.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
