Among the marks of a serious workshop carpet is the use of vegetable-mordanted dyes rather than synthetic colour. The slow plant-based dyes (madder for red, indigo for blue, oak gall for brown) take longer to prepare and produce a less uniform colour at first, but they build the patina that makes hand-knotted carpets valuable as decades pass. The Antique Persian in vegetable dyes is a contemporary work in this serious tradition.

Three weavers shared this loom in India for around five months. The pile is hand-spun wool on a cotton foundation, knotted with the Persian asymmetric knot at a traditional density. The vegetable dyes were prepared in copper vats over multiple weeks before the wool was lowered. After weaving the rug was sheared by hand, washed in a lustre bath, and the selvedges hand-finished along the long edges to keep the rug from curling at the corners.

The composition

A muted ground in soft beige and faint rust carries an open floral repeat in deeper rust, indigo, and ivory, with a layered border in cream and a deeper guard band. The discipline is restraint; the vines breathe rather than crowding the field. The vegetable dyes carry tonal variation that synthetic colour does not produce; the field reads as a single composed surface at distance and resolves into tonal life on approach.

What you are buying

Vegetable-dyed hand-knotted Persian-style carpets price at three to four times this MSRP at Western design dealers. The vegetable-dye process is the labour-intensive heart of the work; the patina that develops over years is the asset. A vegetable-dyed rug genuinely appreciates with age, in a way that synthetic-dyed pieces do not.

The piece in a room

The drawing-room floral carpet pairs with mid-tone plaster walls in cream or warm grey, with walnut and oak floors, with linen and leather upholstery, with brass and bronze lamps. The carpet holds its character against strong art on the walls and against quieter walls; the discipline is to let the rug be the floor furniture rather than competing with patterned wallpaper.

Conservation

Rotate a half turn each spring and autumn. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar disengaged. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth from the outside in. Hand-wash by a wool conservator every five to seven years. With this routine the rug runs eighty to a hundred years.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
