Modern carpet design works in the gap between the textile traditions of Asia and the abstraction the twentieth century pulled into the visual vocabulary of the European and American interior. This rug works the neutral side of that historical palette.

This rug was hand-tufted in India over roughly 7 weeks by a team of two tufters and a single finisher. Wool yarn was driven through a stretched primary canvas by a hand-held tufting gun, the cartoon transferred to the back of the canvas as a guide. After the colour passes were complete the back received a natural latex coat and a cotton scrim laminate to anchor every loop. The carving step took a finisher about a week with hand shears, cutting the pattern into a low relief that pulls a millimetre or two of shadow into every motif edge. The piece behaves differently in lamp light than in north light.

The composition

A green ground carrying the design in a slightly raised relief. The wool sits between matte and lustred depending on how the light falls on it; in north light the field reads cool, in evening light it warms toward the deeper end of the palette. The figure work holds at room distance and reveals itself only on approach, the way a good painting does the same thing in a gallery.

The piece in a room

8' × 10' (244 × 305 cm) is the working scale for a study, a small living room, or a bedroom with the bed positioned across it so the rug shows on three sides. The green carries through both daylight and lamplight, and the cut-pile surface gives the floor a softness that resolves the cooler register of stone or polished concrete underneath.

Care

Vacuum once a week, suction only, no rotating brush. Blot any spill with a dry cloth and follow with a barely damp cloth if needed. The first month or two will produce some loose fibre from the freshly cut pile, which is expected and stops on its own. A specialist dry clean every three to four years keeps the surface fresh and lifts the dust the household vacuum cannot reach.
