Kotan, sometimes spelt Khotan, is the name of an oasis weaving tradition along the southern edge of the Taklamakan desert. The Kotan carpets that travelled west in the late nineteenth century carried open fields, restrained borders, and a tribal pomegranate motif that became one of the recognisable signatures of the Silk Route trade. This rug is a contemporary descendant of that tradition, hand-knotted in sari silk and worked into an ivory ground that lifts the tribal geometry off the floor.

The piece was tied by hand on a vertical loom in India over roughly six months by a small team of weavers. The pile is sari silk, a fibre hand-spun from the cuttings of handloom sari production, and the foundation is cotton, tensioned by hand for an even surface. The pile sits between six and twelve millimetres, slightly fuller than the lowest sari silk weaves, which gives the rug a quiet softness underfoot without losing the crispness of the drawing.

The composition

An ivory ground, warm rather than cold, anchors tribal medallions and lozenges in faded indigo, soft rust, and old gold. The borders are restrained, two thin guard bands rather than the layered borders that mark later commercial work. Sari silk's natural heather means no two ivory knots match exactly, so the field carries a quiet movement that flat-dyed silk cannot. The lustre lifts and falls as you walk past the rug.

What you are buying

Antique Kotan and Samarkand silk pieces of this character routinely trade through specialist Western dealers and the major auction houses in the five to nine lakh range. The MSRP on this rug reflects that comparable. The asked price sits well below it because the carpet is offered direct from the workshop. Hand-knotted silk on cotton appreciates with use rather than depreciating, and a Kotan-pattern ivory field is among the more sought-after compositions in the category.

The piece in a room

This is a generous, considered carpet for a primary living or drawing room. The ivory ground reflects rather than absorbs interior light, lifting the room rather than weighing it down. The piece sits well with walnut, dark rosewood, brushed brass, and either cream or pale-clay walls. Pair it with restrained upholstery and let the rug carry the pattern alone. Avoid placing the carpet in a high-traffic entryway; ivory silk asks for a considered room.

Conservation

Rotate the rug a half turn at each change of season to even light and traffic wear. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar off and suction only. Blot any spill with a clean dry cotton cloth and never rub silk pile. Schedule a hand-wash by a silk-trained conservator every five to seven years. Treated this way the piece outlasts its first room and develops the soft sheen older silk carpets are prized for.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
