Ziegler is the name of a design school rather than a place. In 1883 a German firm based in Manchester opened a buying office in western Persia and began commissioning weavers to redraw the dense classical Persian repeats into looser, larger, more pictorial fields suited to Anglo-American interiors. The new vocabulary kept the construction discipline of the source tradition and softened the colour to fit drawing rooms lit by gas and oil. The pattern in front of you is a contemporary weaving in that lineage.

Three weavers shared a vertical loom for about five months. The pile is hand-spun wool on a cotton warp, knotted by hand row by row using a Persian asymmetric knot. The dyes are vegetable: madder root for the soft rusts that border the field, indigo and woad for the light blue accents in the central medallion, walnut hull for the warm browns, and oak gall for the deeper anchor points in the corners. The beige ground is undyed wool blended from two fleece batches to give it a faint tonal drift across the length of the rug.

The composition

A beige and light-blue field carries an open Ziegler medallion drawn at large scale, with vine and palmette work radiating into the corners rather than crowding the centre. The border is layered but quiet: a single guard in soft rust, a main band in light blue and beige, a second narrow guard in cream. The light blue is unusual in Ziegler weaving and pulls the warmer beige forward into the room. With age the blue will cool by half a shade and the beige will warm into oat. The contrast tightens over the first decade rather than fading.

What you are buying

Original Ziegler carpets from the 1880s and 1890s sell at Christie's and Sotheby's in the $25,000 to $70,000 range when they appear in honest condition. This is a new weaving in the same construction tradition, drawn from the same source vocabulary, in hand-spun wool on a cotton foundation. The price reflects weaver-months and fibre grade rather than auction provenance. Hand-knotted wool at this build appreciates with sympathetic use.

The piece in a room

The rug carries a primary living room or a generous dining setup. The beige and light blue palette pairs with cream-painted walls, lime wash, and warm wood floors. It also sits cleanly against deeper teal or muted ochre architecture, where the medallion reads as the focal element. Keep upholstery in solids and natural fibres so the floor holds the visual weight.

Conservation

Rotate twice a year so foot traffic and light wear the pile evenly. Vacuum weekly with suction only and the beater bar disengaged. Blot spills with a clean dry cotton cloth at first contact. A wool-trained conservator should hand-wash the rug every five to seven years. With this care the carpet outlasts its first two owners.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
