The dotted field is a quiet kind of order. A single repeating mark across an open ground, descended through Bauhaus textile work and the Japanese kasuri tradition. The rug needs no centre and no border because the dot is its own discipline.

Two weavers worked the rug over around four months. The dots were tied row by row into a hand-spun wool pile against a cotton foundation. The slight irregularity in the spacing is the trace of the hand.

The composition

The wool was hand-spun and the dyes prepared in small batches, so the field carries the quiet unevenness that the human hand leaves on every step of the process. The rug is meant to be encountered up close at this size and its detail repays the proximity. Conservation

Conservation of a hand-knotted carpet is a matter of small consistent attention. Rotate the rug end for end at six-month intervals to even the wear. Vacuum weekly on suction with no rotary brush; the bar will pull at the pile and accelerate ageing. Blot any spill immediately with a clean dry cotton cloth, working from the outside of the spill toward its centre. Send the piece for a hand wash by a wool-trained conservator every five to seven years.
