The classical Tabriz pattern in gold and black draws on a court tradition that goes back to the Safavid workshops of the sixteenth century, where weavers developed the curvilinear medallion system that later defined the entire idiom of Persian carpet design. A central rosette anchors the field, vine work radiates outward in measured curves, and the corners answer the medallion in quartered miniature. The pattern survives because nothing in it is wasted; every line in the drawing has a structural job.

Five weavers shared the loom for nine months to complete this 12' x 18' (366 x 549 cm) carpet. The pile is hand-spun wool drawn from highland fleeces, washed in cold river water and combed before spinning so the fibre keeps its natural length and lustre. The dyes were prepared in small copper vessels, from madder root for the gold tones and oak gall for the black, and matured for three weeks before the wool was lowered. Every knot was tied by feel against a vertical beam in India.

The composition

A deep saturated black field carries a luminous gold medallion at its centre, with vine work in softer ochre running corner to corner. The contrast between gold and black does most of the work; the secondary palette stays restrained so the drawing reads at a distance. Over the years the black will warm slightly into charcoal and the gold will deepen toward antique brass. The colour is not finished. It will keep settling.

What you are buying

Antique Tabriz carpets of equivalent scale and condition trade at international auction in the range of $40,000 to $90,000, when they appear at all. This is a new weaving in the same tradition, on the same kind of vertical loom, in the same hand-spun wool, drawn from the same pattern grammar. A carpet of this density and lineage appreciates with use rather than depreciating. The MSRP of five lakh reflects what the same piece would cost through a Western dealer; the listed price reflects direct sourcing.

The piece in a room

12' x 18' (366 x 549 cm) is the canonical scale for a formal drawing room or a long dining hall with a twelve-seat table. The black field grounds tall walls in lime wash or limewashed plaster, and the gold answers brass sconces, walnut joinery, and unlacquered hardware. The carpet expects to sit under the architecture rather than under the furniture; arrange the room around it, not on top of it.

Conservation

Rotate a half turn each spring and autumn so light and footfall age the wool evenly. Vacuum weekly with suction only, beater bar disengaged. Blot any spill immediately with a clean cotton cloth, never rub against the pile. A trained wool conservator should hand-wash the carpet every six to seven years. With this regimen the piece runs for a hundred years and outlives its first owners.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.

Have a question about this carpet?

We are happy to answer questions about size, material, weave technique, sample availability, custom orders, lead times, or anything else. Average reply time is under 30 minutes during business hours (10am – 7pm IST).
