The transitional category emerged in the 1990s as collectors began asking for carpets that carried the technical signature of classical hand-knotted work without the chromatic intensity of nineteenth-century pieces. The contemporary studios responded with reduced palettes and softened motifs over the same loom and the same recipe. The piece is one entry in that ongoing record.
1 weaver shared the loom for 2 months. The hand-spun wool was tied knot by knot against a vertical beam, the pattern read off a cartoon set behind the warp. Plant dyes were prepared in copper vats over four to six weeks of slow extraction before the wool was lowered. The piece is offered at 3' x 5' (91 × 152 cm) in a natural register, made in India.
The composition
Natural dominates the composition. The drawing is built on contrast that resolves into harmony rather than tension. The dominant colour holds the field, the secondary values trace the figure, and the smallest accents punctuate the corners. The composition reads in a single take from a doorway and rewards a slower look from a chair. The wool is the carrier here, accepting the colour without flattening it and holding the slight variations of dye lot that read as life rather than as flaw.
The piece in a room
3' x 5' (91 × 152 cm) is small-format territory. The rug functions as a counterpoint rather than a ground, ideal beside a bed, before a console, or as a defined patch in a dressing area. At this scale the colour intensifies because the eye reads the whole field at a glance, the way a tile reads against a stone floor.
Conservation
Turn the rug a half rotation twice a year. Vacuum with suction only, no rotating brush, on the lowest practical setting. Spills are blotted with cotton, never scrubbed. A hand-wash by a wool-experienced cleaner every five to seven years restores the lustre that household dust slowly dulls. With proper care the rug runs a century. A felt or wool pad underneath protects the foundation from hard floors and adds a softness underfoot that the pile alone does not provide.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
