Around 1880, the Sultanabad workshops in western Iran began producing carpets specifically for the new collector class in London and New York. The brief was simple. Open the dense Safavid floral repeats. Drop the saturation. Move toward fields and palettes the new generation wanted under their dining tables and in their drawing rooms. The carpets that emerged set a template that the Indian floor-loom workshops have continued to refine for the past century.
Two to three weavers shared a loom for about four months in India. Around 1.6 million asymmetric knots tied against cotton warps in hand-spun New Zealand wool. The dyes were prepared from madder root, indigo, walnut hull, and oak gall, each matured for two to three weeks in copper vats before the wool was lowered. The piece was finished with a slow tea wash that pulls the new wool's brightness down into a measured rustic patina the Sultanabad tradition prefers.
The composition
An open ivory and rust ground anchored by a soft central medallion in faded ochre. Vine work in indigo runs corner to corner with the slight irregularity that only plant dye produces. The border holds a single deep band rather than the layered borders that turn lesser pieces in this tradition busy. Over the years the rust will lighten, the indigos will deepen, and the ivory will warm toward bone.
What you are buying
Period Sultanabads with comparable condition and 1900-1920 attribution trade at Christie's and Rippon Boswell in the range of $20,000 to $50,000 when they surface at all. This is a new weaving inside the same tradition, on the same kind of loom, to the same density, in the same fibre. The carpet appreciates with use rather than depreciating. The MSRP comparison is the auction record, not the retail catalogue.
The piece in a room
6' x 9' (183 x 274 cm) is the working scale for a compact living area, a primary bedroom under the bed and night stands, or a square dining alcove. The rustic palette settles into homes with walnut floors, exposed brick, or warm-grey walls. Direct afternoon light helps; UV restores the indigo depth that interior light slowly washes out.
Conservation
Rotate a half turn each spring and autumn so foot traffic and sunlight age the wool evenly. Vacuum weekly with suction only, beater bar off. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth, never rub. Schedule a hand-wash by a wool-trained conservator every five to seven years. Cared for at this level the carpet runs eighty years.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
