The dhurrie tradition runs across the Indian subcontinent from the cotton fields of the south to the wool weavers of the north. The dhurrie flatweave composition here belongs to the wool-weft branch of that lineage, the warp held in cotton for stability and the weft worked through the shed in coloured wool that builds the figure as it builds the structure of the rug.

Made on a treadle loom in India over 3 weeks. The multi wool weft was beaten down by hand into a cotton warp. The flat surface is what makes a dhurrie last decades on a high-traffic floor; with no pile to crush, the rug holds its character through years of use that would flatten a tufted equivalent.

The composition

Multi carries the field in flat planes; the dhurrie flatweave drawing emerges where the weaver changes yarn. The surface has the slight ribbing that a hand loom always leaves and that machine production can only imitate. The colour is built into the weft itself rather than added on top of it, which is why the rug holds its character across years of use.

The economics

Hand-loomed wool flatweaves of this kind sit at the practical end of the collecting spectrum. The making is slow, the wool is good, and the price is set against what a comparable Western workshop would charge for the same hours. The rug holds value through years of household use rather than depreciating from the first day.

Care

Vacuum weekly with the beater bar off. Flip the rug end-to-end every six months so the wear pattern stays even. Spot clean spills with a damp cotton cloth and mild detergent. A flatweave can be hand-washed cold every couple of years and air-dried flat. Avoid pile cleaners; the structure does not need them, and harsh chemistry damages the wool over time.
