Persian floral vocabulary travelled along the trade routes between central Iran and northern India for centuries, and the Sino-Persian and Varsari workshops that produced this red and beige composition descend in a direct line from that exchange. Persian floral vocabulary travelled along the trade routes between central Iran and northern India for centuries, and the Sino-Persian and Varsari workshops that produced this red and beige composition descend in a direct line from that exchange. The cartoon belongs to a hybrid tradition where the formal Persian arabesque was loosened into a broader composition, with the borders simplified and the field opened out for a contemporary room.

Three weavers shared the upright loom for around six months. Hand-spun wool was dyed in small lots over copper, with the red drawn from madder root and the beige left close to the natural fleece colour with a light walnut wash. Roughly 1.4 million Persian-asymmetric knots were tied by feel against a cotton warp, beaten down by hand, and finished with a uniform hand-shear.

The composition

A red field carrying floral arabesques in soft beige, ivory, and walnut brown. The floral repeats are open rather than dense, the border restrained, the central medallion held in soft ochre. Vegetable dye gives the red a slight irregularity in saturation across the field that flat dye cannot match. Over the first decade the red will warm by half a stop and the beige passages will deepen into a closer cream.

What you are buying

New Sino-Persian and Varsari tradition hand-knotted wool carpets at this density and dye process retail through European dealers at three lakh and above. The piece is offered direct from the Indian workshop. The carpet appreciates with use rather than depreciating, an attribute no other domestic object on the floor can claim.

The piece in a room

8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) anchors a primary living room or sits cleanly under a six-seat dining table. The red and beige palette reads against cream plaster walls, against deep walnut joinery, and against pale oak floors. It pairs with leather upholstery in cognac or tobacco, with brass lighting, and with mid-century walnut. The composition prefers warm whites to cool greys.

Conservation

Suction vacuum every week. Rotate end to end each spring and autumn. Blot spills with a clean white cotton cloth from the edge inward. Avoid bleach. A wool conservator should hand-wash the rug every five years to restore lanolin and remove embedded grit.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.

Have a question about this carpet?
