The Mashad school produced some of the largest and most ambitious Persian carpets of the late nineteenth century, working at scales the smaller workshops could not handle and using a palette built around saturated reds and deep blacks. The Shalimar drawing in this carpet borrows from that lineage but resolves the field into a contemporary balance, with a black ground centred under a controlled red medallion rather than the older multi-medallion compositions the original Mashad tradition favoured. The result is graphic and architectural at the same time.
Four weavers shared this 10' x 14' (305 x 427 cm) loom for roughly seven months. The wool is highland-grade and hand-spun, washed in cold water so the fibre keeps its lanolin and lustre. Dyes were prepared from madder root for the red, oak gall and indigo for the black, and walnut hull for the secondary browns; every dye lot was matured for two to three weeks in copper vessels before the wool was lowered. The carpet was knotted in India on a vertical loom, in the Persian asymmetric knot the Mashad school has used since the workshop period.
The composition
A deep saturated black field carries a single controlled red medallion at its centre, with corner work answering the medallion in quartered miniature. The colour interaction does the work; black and red refuse to soften toward each other and the carpet draws its strength from that refusal. With time the black will warm slightly into charcoal and the red will deepen into oxblood, the way every vegetable-dyed Persian-tradition carpet ages.
What you are buying
Antique Mashad carpets of comparable scale and condition trade at international auction in the range of $12,000 to $30,000 when they appear. This is a new weaving in the same Mashad tradition, on the same vertical loom type, in hand-spun highland wool, with vegetable dyes. The piece appreciates with use rather than depreciating, and a Mashad in this scale and palette is among the more liquid object types in the wider Asian carpet market.
The piece in a room
10' x 14' (305 x 427 cm) is a serious drawing room or formal dining scale. The black ground holds tall walls in lime wash, dark joinery, and unlacquered brass, while the red medallion answers leather, walnut, and warm metals. The carpet is at its best in a room with controlled natural light through the day; harsh direct sun for many hours can flatten the dye depth over decades.
Conservation
Rotate a half turn each spring and autumn so traffic and light age the wool evenly. Vacuum weekly on suction with the beater bar disengaged. Blot any spill with a clean cotton cloth immediately, never rub against the pile. A wool-trained conservator should hand-wash the carpet every five to six years. Cared for this way, the piece runs ninety years or more.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
